According to Agostini, young people in Luxembourg are unable to become home owners or even tenants given the steady rise in rent costs. The JDL president therefore argued that the government should make short-term investments and drastically increase the offer of affordable housing opportunities. In concrete terms, he proposed to increase the construction rate and improve urban and rural town planning. Furthermore, he wants the government to free up €1 billion to buy up to 1,500 existing properties.
“As investments are also in sharp decline, the cap on the super-reduced VAT rate should be increased for one year”, proposed the JDL president.
Agostini further pointed out that the Grand Duchy’s population is projected to reach 1.5 million people by 2060, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), which is a trend that needs to be taken into consideration. He also drew attention to the fact that private cars are still indispensable in the Grand Duchy and made a case that alternative modes of transportation, such as bicycles, deserve their place on Luxembourg’s roads.
