Critical reportGovernment must 'fundamentally' overhaul its climate plan: Ecological Movement

RTL Today
Despite announcing its climate plan as the 'most ambitious climate plan in all of Europe', the government's climate plan has come under fierce criticism.

The latest organisation to criticise the government's climate policy is the Ecological Movement (Mouveco). Its president, Blanche Weber, stressed that the government's plans require a fundamental overhaul. The movement has solidly criticised the government's conception of the climate protection law and the national energy and climate plan.

Weber added that the first draft of the climate protection law had not only not been corrected, but had also degraded in quality on several points. The movement stressed that all three governing parties are responsibly for the lack of solid and concrete climate change plans.

The overview of the national energy and climate plan is akin to a wishlist, Weber added. She also highlighted the lack of thought to the topic of growth, which, according to Mouveco, must be taken into consideration in order to effectively introduce climate protection policy. At the presentation of the movement's criticisms, the president pointed out that a leak in October had led to hope among climate activists, but the actual legal document had been highly disappointing.

Mouveco stressed that the government must clearly define and describe its measures to reduce CO2 emissions alongside other areas such as energy efficiency and renewables.

Finally, the movement made it clear that increasing fuel excises is by far an insufficient move to offset carbon emissions.
