The government has announced new support in a boost for independents and freelancers suffering financial difficulties due to the coronavirus crisis.

On Friday morning the government council approved new financial aid for the self-employed, in the form of a one-time payment.

The sum will range from €3,000, €3,500 and €4,000 depending on the individual’s income bracket and does not need to be repaid.

The support is aimed at people who make a living from their self-employment and they must be registered with social security in order to benefit from the payment. Their professional income must be at least equal to or greater than a third of minimum wage, and must not exceed the amount of two and a half times the social minimum wage.

The Minister for Small- and Medium-sized Businesses, Lex Delles, said that the self-employed had been strongly affected by the pandemic, and it was essential to strengthen financial support in order to help them through this difficult period.

Delles added that the bill would be tabled in the Chamber of Deputies as soon as possible.
