Google's intentions to build a vital data centre in the municipality of Bissen are well-known by now. What is less clear, however, is the impact on the community and its inhabitants.

Understandably, concerns have been aired regarding the implementation of the project, which led the US tech giant to meet with residents on Thursday night to discuss the project and answer questions.

The meeting was reportedly a success, with 250 seats filled and around 400 people present in total. Representatives from Google discussed the two phases of construction and displayed plans and models to the public. However, criticism surrounding certain aspects remained in place, with many residents still expressing scepticism.

Although the government is keen to attract the internet giant, the local council, which now boasts a new mayor, must also have a say. The cooling system and in particular, the safeguarding of local drinking water formed one of mayor David Viaggi's most pressing questions, as he pointed out the municipality was unwilling to put their tap water at risk.

Viaggi wished to know what emergency measures would take place in the event that water from the Alzette river could not be used. Above all, the questions pushed for transparency on behalf of Google's management, particularly concerning energy usage. Without the answers to these issues, Viaggi said it would be difficult to proceed with a vote.
