Border checks between Luxembourg and GermanyGerman interior minister comments on security measures

RTL Today
Increased border security between Luxembourg and Germany was introduced with the advent of the European Championships, but caused disruption to traffic in the area. RTL reached out to Germany's interior minister for comment.

Recently, Luxembourg’s Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, held talks with his German counterpart Nancy Faeser to find a solution to the traffic issues. On Wednesday, Gloden confirmed the checkpoints would be reduced on border bridges to reduce disruption.

RTL contacted the German Ministry to find out exactly what was discussed on the subject, but the Ministry declined to supply further details.

A spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of the Interior said the increased security measures were important in relation to the ongoing Euro 2024 football championships:

“The temporary internal border controls are part of the comprehensive security measures taken by the federal and state police forces to ward off any threats from abroad. In particular, any violent offenders who may be arriving should be identified and stopped at an early stage.”

The checkpoints on selected routes led to particularly long traffic jams in rush hour. In addition to the ministerial conversation, both German and Luxembourg police held a meeting in which they decided to scrap checks on the border bridges.

Although the press release indicated the checks would be halted immediately, several RTL readers have since been in contact to say there are still ongoing checks on selected bridges across the Moselle.

In addition, two lanes should be introduced in the area of the construction site behind the Sauerdallbrück.

The checks will last until July 19.
