Since 2005, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has actively participated in the European Mobility Week, which takes place every year in mid-September. Since its introduction in 2002, the European Mobility Week's impact has continued to grow: 2,792 cities have committed to the campaign in 2018, including 33 in Luxembourg.

The goal of the 2019 campaign is to highlight a mode of transport which is often neglected: walking. With the slogan "Walk with us!", the  Verkéiersverbond and the Ministry of Mobility and Transport are encouraging municipalities to implement specific initiatives.

François Bausch, Minister for Transport, said walking was not only a matter of health, but could also be fun if the infrastructure is properly adapted. It is also more social and ecological. He reiterated that the use of public transport would be free for the duration of Mobility Week.

The programme reflects the initiative and creativity of local municipalities: mobility days, presentations on electric cars and bicycles and mobility concepts, or even the distribution of croissants and coffee to public transport passengers - these are just a few of the suggestions.

As a further example, the first 1,000 cyclists to pass the Schuman roundabout on 16 September at 9am will receive gifts. On 19 September, the Safe walking, cycling, wheeling day will be comprised of stands for entertainment and information to promote mobility for all. A circuit on Kirchberg will welcome cyclists, pedestrians, wheelchair users and adapted bikes such as joëlettes, bécassines and tandem bikes.
