The minister hopes that the new tram along the Esch-sur-Alzette motorway will be operational by 2035. A feasibility study is expected to shed light on the project in spring. The next step would be detailed project proposal.

Currently, officials are examining a number of aspects of the project, such as the material best-suited for the new tram, routing calculations, and determining the best positions for tram stops along the A4 motorway.

In his reply to a parliamentary question by CSV MP Felix Eischen, Bausch explained that the majority of land adjacent to the motorway is already state-owned. The new tram will be complemented by an express bike lane linking Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg City. Officials are planning on avoiding intersections between the tram rails and the bike lane.

Bausch did not specify whether a similar tram line would also make sense along the A6 motorway. A new national mobility plan shedding light on these questions will be presented in 2022.
