Four people were injured late on Friday night after a roof fire broke out at a hotel-restaurant in Belvaux, prompting a major emergency response and forcing the business to close indefinitely. The fire started at around 11.20pm in the building loacated on Rue des Alliés.
According to the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), rescue teams from across the region were deployed, including around 80 firefighters, a special drone unit, and the emergency medical services (SAMU).
One person suffered severe smoke-related injuries and had to be rescued from one of the upper floors with a ladder.
Police have confirmed in the meantime that one of the guests still at the scene upon their arrival admitted to having started the fire. They were arrested by order of the public prosecutor’s office and will face an examining magistrate on Saturday afternoon. The prosecution has further ordered a criminal investigation into the incident.
Speaking to RTL, the owner of the hotel-restaurant said that the fire initially started in one of the rooms and then spread quickly. He was among the four people taken to hospital for precautionary checks, with one person remaining hospitalised for further tests.
As the establishment will remain closed for an indefinite period, its 16 employees now face temporary involuntary layoff. Seven rooms were occupied at the time of the fire, and the affected guests were rehoused in nearby hotels.
The fire was one of several incidents reported across Luxembourg on Friday evening, with a total of six people injured.
Earlier in the evening, two people were wounded in a collision between two cars at around 6.45pm on Rue de Stavelot in Diekirch. At 7.25pm, another crash involving two cars on the CR144 between Oetrange and Canach left one person injured.
Two more people were hurt at around 8.30pm in a car accident between Hosingen and Obereisenbach. And shortly before midnight, a motorcyclist was injured after falling on the Arlon Road between Mamer and Capellen.
