Former Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) politician and Marshal of the Court Lucien Weiler has died suddenly at the age of 74. The politician and lawyer was born on 3 August 1951 in Ettelbruck and studied law in Liège. He took the oath as a lawyer on 9 February 1977 and remained registered with the Bar until his death.

Lucien Weiler was active in municipal politics in Diekirch from 1986 to 1993, including as an alderman. From 1984 to 2013, he served as an MP for the CSV in the Chamber of Deputies.
During this period, he was also the President of the Chamber of Deputies from 2004 to 2009. After his time in politics, Lucien Weiler served as Marshal of the Court from 2016 until his retirement in 2020.
Lucien Weiler is survived by his wife and two sons. One of them is the Diekirch CSV MP and mayor Charel Weiler.
As a sign of mourning and respect, the Chamber will fly the flags at half-mast for three days from Monday for the honorary former President of the Chamber.
Luxembourg is losing a great politician with Lucien Weiler, Prime Minister and CSV party president Luc Frieden said in an initial reaction on RTL: “I am losing a friend with Lucien Weiler. And the country, and the CSV too, are losing a great politician. A friend, because I have to say, Lucien Weiler was my first parliamentary group leader when I became a young MP. What always impressed me, and what I also took away as a lesson, is that he gave young people an immense opportunity. He allowed me to be a first budget rapporteur. He allowed me to carry out the constitutional reform. He therefore supported young people.
“Among other things, what impressed me is that, although he was a successful lawyer, he devoted his entire life to serving the public. He was, I believe, an MP for 30 years, including as President of the Chamber, and that was the commitment he made to the country. That is why we are, of course, sad, but we also owe him a great deal.”
