The Grand Duke addressed the changes in the world that are causing uncertainty. He noted that inflation particularly penalizes the economically weak. “Therefore, we must show solidarity and ensure that no one falls through the safety nets of our society,” said the Grand Duke.

Further uncertainties are contributed by the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The worsening climate change and the increasing number of refugees also add to these concerns. The Grand Duke thus appeals to society to stand together and show courage, to prevent the values of respect and tolerance from being trampled upon. He emphasized the privilege of living in an open democracy, which should be more appreciated than ever.

The Grand Duke also spoke about the multicultural nature of the country. “Part of our heritage is our openness towards the world, our refusal to build walls around Luxembourg,” he stressed, and also thanked the cross-border workers for their contribution.

This year, Grand Duke Henri also attended the COP28 climate conference in Dubai. There, he observed that progress can only be made collectively. Technology can advance us, but everyone must contribute. This is to ensure that future generations can live in peace and dignity on the planet.
