Leudelange-based grocery wholesaler la Provençale has been facing accusations following their increase in price on groceries in times of crisis.
In a statement, Provençale says that chicken and fish have remained unaffected by the increase for the past two weeks, whereas fruit and veg have become more expensive. However, they say they had no choice as the increase stems from the fact companies in southern Europe have not had sufficient staff for harvests.
In addition, trucks have been going north with a full load but are having to return empty. It has also proven challenging to find truck drivers still willing to drive out of concern for their health. Also, sanitary installations on highways have been closed for truck drivers.
Hence, due to an increase in demand and simultaneous decrease in supply, prices have gone up as a consequence.
With restaurants having to close in an effort to slow down the spread of the virus, this has also had an impact on the wholesaler. Provençale estimates a loss of 1€ million each week, and this is after the state aids.
A total of 1.400 members of staff are working at Provençale.
