The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) on Sunday saved a blind and deaf dog from drowning in the Alzette river. Pedestrians walking along the river banks had sounded the alarm when they spotted the dog distressed in the shallow waters of the Alzette near Roeser at around 2.30pm.

Divers from CIS Hesperange were thus soon alerted. However, in the end the firefighters from CIS Roeserbann were the ones who eventually managed, not without difficulty, to catch the dog. They used a ladder to “gauge the depth of the water” and “find a foothold”.

According to Claude Damy, head of the Roeserbann centre, the dog was not only “completely exhausted,” but since he was both blind and deaf, “he probably couldn’t find his way out of the water” and up onto the bank.

The divers were called off and, once rescued from the water, the dog was placed in safe hands, wrapped in a blanket. The police then took over and were quickly able to locate the dog’s owner. Needless to say, the owner was relieved when the police came to hand over his faithful companion after the perilous dip in the Alzette.
