Over the last 30 years, the national agriculture sector has shrunk significantly, with almost half of all businesses having disappeared since the 1990s. However, in the same time period, farmers were forced to produce enough food for an ever-growing population.

1,800 agricultural businesses were active in 2019.

Pressure on the agricultural sector is building up, said president Christian Wester at a recent gathering of the Bauerenzentral. During the meeting, Guy Feyder made a case for how members can help fight climate change by capturing carbon dioxide and storing it in the ground.

However, this initiative is not being supported or valued enough by EU officials, which is why farmers hope that the government may still intervene on their behalf. Furthermore, they want support in their recruitment attempts to guarantee a safe future for the sector.
