Winemaking in LuxembourgExperts explore trends and challenges in the industry

RTL Today
A recent panel discussion on RTL Radio delved into the world of wine, featuring insights from industry experts, including Jeff Konsbrück, Vice President of the Association of Private Winegrowers, André Mehlen, Director of Domaines Vinsmoselle, and Serge Fischer, Director of the Viticulture Institute.

According to Konsbrück, younger generations are shifting their approach to wine, consuming less and viewing it as an occasional pleasure rather than an indulgence. Mehlen echoed this sentiment, noting a rising demand for non-alcoholic wine and sparkling wines, reflecting a broader trend towards health-conscious choices.

ITM inspections amount to ‘harassment’

Konsbrück expressed concerns about the inspections conducted by the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM) during the grape harvest, describing them as “harassment” that the new government should address. Fischer, the new director of the Viticulture Institute, highlighted the partially contradictory regulations regarding the registration of seasonal workers, suggesting the need for a simplified procedure without compromising social achievements.

‘We need to attract more visitors to the Moselle region’

Addressing industry challenges, Konsbrück welcomed the government’s initiative to ease construction in green zones, foreseeing benefits for winegrowers in opening tasting rooms. However, Mehlen raised a counterpoint, emphasising the need to attract visitors to the Moselle region, suggesting that more efforts should be invested in this regard.

Adapting to climate change

The Director of the Viticulture Institute shed light on measures taken to adapt to climate change and extreme weather. These include experiments with drought-resistant rootstocks and the cultivation of new varieties like Merlot. Fischer also proposed exploring the possibility of installing solar panels over vineyards, provided that the necessary funds are available.
