European Capital of CultureEsch2022 marks opening night with open air spectacle

RTL Today
Saturday evening saw the launch of the Esch-sur-Alzette residency as 'European Capital of Culture' for the year 2022.

Around 25,000 visitors flocked to Esch-sur-Alzette and Belval on Saturday evening to commemorate the start of the cultural residency. They were treated to light shows, concerts, and DJ sets, among other things.

The highlight of the evening was a multimedia rocket launch, which was simulated on top of the furnaces of the former industrial site.

Being the European Capital of Culture for the year 2022 is however not the sole responsibility of Esch-sur-Alzette, as the title is also shared with two further cities: Novi Sad in Serbia launched its residency on 13 January, while Kaunas in Lithuania commemorated the start of its residency on 22 January.
