Parliamentary DebateEsch2022, failure or success for southern Luxembourg?

RTL Today
During a debate in the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday, MP and Mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette Georges Mischo reacted to criticism from the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (adr) that Esch2022 was a "missed opportunity" for southern Luxembourg.

The adr had requested a parliamentary discussion about Esch2022, European Capital of Culture.

The opposition party claimed that the project was a missed opportunity for the south of the country. According to adr MPs, Esch2022 was “an event for insiders” that “failed to involve the general public.”

In response, Mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette Georges Mischo, who also serves as an MP for the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), stressed that it is still too early to draw conclusions regarding Esch2022. Mischo pointed out that figures on the event are expected to be published in May.

Meanwhile, Minister of Culture Sam Tanson noted that “the fact that Luxembourg consistently invests in culture” is more important to her than figures and statistics. She also highlighted the “great dynamic” that the project brought to the South and expressed hope that this energy can be sustained in the future.

In a press release published at the end of February, the organisers of Esch2022 presented the results of a study showing the positive impact that the event had had on the region.
