Europa Nostra is a citizens’ movement advocating for the protection of endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe. Launched in 2013, the programme publishes a list of the seven most endangered sites every year.
“This programme serves as a catalyst to mobilise experts, stop inappropriate developments and secure public and private support, including financial resources and other forms of help. Every site on the shortlist is eligible for a cultural heritage grant worth 10,000 euros from the EIB to support concrete measures to secure each site.”
The Blower’s Hall in Belval, built in 1910, has been added to the 2026 shortlist. The building, originally part of the iron ore processing factory, represents Luxembourg’s industrial heritage and serves to remind of a time in which steel production supported both the regional and national economy.
Europa Nostra’s press release said:
“The Blower’s Hall is an exceptional monument of industrial heritage at one of the most important 20th century steel production sites in Luxembourg. It is not only a historical landmark, but a potential model for sustainable adaptable reuse in Europe. The proposed transformation into a multi-functional site for culture, university education, science and social engagement could be a fine example of sustainable city development. As part of the “Cité des Sciences” pilot project, the rehabilitation of the Blower’s Hall could link past and future, push innovation and retain cultural heritage.”
Among the other sites on the shortlist are:
Europa Nostra experts will work alongside the organisations responsible for each site to establish individual projects, to be implemented over the next two years with the help of the EIB subsidies.
