The witness fainted in court and was taken away by ambulance on Wednesday. He has since been discharged from hospital, but has been signed off work for three days, which means the trial cannot continue.
The witness' comments the day before must also be clarified for the President of the Tribunal. The trial has therefore been adjourned until 23 September.
The defendant's lawyer opposed the decision as his client will be forced to remain in provisional detention for the duration of the delay. The case concerns a brawl which took place at a café near Esch-sur-Alzette station in July 2018, in which the victim was stabbed in the back.
Lawyer Fränk Wies said he wished to clarify the witness statement as quickly as possible, as the witness claimed two people were present at the time of the stabbing, rather than one.
Wies said there was a risk that the witness would no longer recall his statement by September. However, if the client wants to appeal in the event of a conviction, witnesses are no longer called on appeal. This witness will therefore be recalled, even if the trial is extended by seven weeks.
