The elephant in the European room is, of course, Brexit. Weber, a candidate to become the next European Commission president, claimed he has mixed feelings about the extension. The heads of government now owe it to their citizens to explain the impact of the extension on the European elections, he argued.

Whilst Weber expressed mixed feelings, CSV president Frank Engel more outspokenly criticized recent Brexit developments. In his opinion, the charade needs to end at some point. He believed that the EU should have told the British on Wednesday that they had 48 hours to decide - if necessary leading to no-deal scenario on Friday.

Other topics at the core for the EPP, aside from Brexit, are migration and economic challenges that the EU is facing. However, Weber's must crucial point was his plea for the electorate not to vote for a number of populists on 26 May.

As for the Hungarian Fidesz party, Weber confirmed that the party's suspension from the EPP was sending a strong signal to show that Viktor Orbàn was no longer involved in taking key decisions. The party is nevertheless not definitively excluded from the EPP.
