The most recent sighting is said to have occurred in the area of Derenbach/Nörtringen on Wednesday evening. A man reported this potential wolf sighting to the Environment Agency. Upon enquiry by our colleagues from RTL.lu, the agency’s deputy director, Laurent Schley, confirmed that several people had recently contacted them because they thought they had spotted a wolf or traces of the animal.

The Derenbach/Nörtringen case was classified as a ‘Type C3' sighting, which means that it can neither be confirmed nor refuted. Four samples retrieved from other potential sighting locations, however, are currently being examined in the laboratory of a specialised institute.

The Environment Agency does not know when the results will be available. One of the samples is related to a case in which a dead sheep, most likely killed by a wild animal, was discovered in the area of Basbellain in the municipality of Troisvierges. There has also been an increase in the number of cases in the nearby Belgo-Luxembourgish border region around Bastogne where people have contacted authorities because they thought they had seen a wolf.

The Environment Agency asks residents to report any signs of wolf presence as quickly as possible by e-mail to wolf@anf.etat.lu
