In an interview with RTL Radio on Wednesday, two weeks before his retirement, Bertemes addressed the opening of a second ENAD location in Esch/Belval. He acknowledged the logistical challenges this expansion presents, such as the potential for some teachers needing to work across both locations.
Bertemes emphasised that the school’s leadership transition remains undecided, pending the Minister of Education’s appointment.
Founded in 2011 with just 50 students in Pétange, ENAD initially served as a “second chance school,” providing individuals with opportunities to re-enter the traditional education system. Today, the school caters to over 600 individuals, including graduates and those seeking “upskilling” through continuing education. Bertemes attributes this growth to the increasing demand for educational options outside of the traditional system.
ENAD prioritises preventing students from dropping out a second time by offering personalised support. Each student is assigned a tutor for regular individual meetings. Headmaster Bertemes acknowledged the diverse reasons for dropping out, ranging from personal and financial hardships to family issues and mental health concerns, exacerbated by the pandemic. Many current students at ENAD withdrew entirely during the Covid-19 crisis. Additionally, learning difficulties such as dyscalculia or dyslexia can contribute to students leaving school. Therefore, ENAD emphasises tailored support to identify individual needs and rebuild trust in the education system.
While most students currently pursue graduation, Bertemes noted a growing demand for continuing education in the socio-educational sector, such as educator training. ENAD offers flexible options like alternating programmes (two days of school, three days of work) to cater to these needs.
Beyond infrastructure challenges, Bertemes identifies adapting the curriculum to align with labour market demands as a key focus. According to outgoing headmaster Jos Bertemes, this ensures graduates have concrete career prospects. For many, ENAD represents not just a second chance, but potentially their final opportunity to earn a diploma.
