Luxembourg has recorded eight cases of monkeypox since the disease was first recorded in Europe in April 2022.

On Saturday, the health authorities confirmed that two more cases have been recorded over the course of a week.

The count does not include any infections discovered since 14 July, the Ministry of Health said in a statement sent to the press.

None of the affected people had to be hospitalised.

What are the symptoms?

According to the Ministry of Health, the majority of infected people have skin rashes (95.2%) and symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, chills, sore throat, and headaches (64%).

What are the guidelines to follow?

Luxembourg’s health authorities remind the public that to avoid spreading the virus, residents should

  • wash their hands regularly with soap
  • avoid sharing bed linen and towels with infected people
  • wear protection in case of sexual contact

More than 8,000 cases in Europe

Since the outbreak of the virus in Europe, a total of 8,238 cases have been reported to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). 6,899 of these cases have been confirmed in a laboratory.

“The earliest date of onset of symptoms was reported on 3 April 2022,” according to the European health authorities. The majority of those infected are men between 31 and 40 years old, according to European statistics.

To date, only three people have been admitted to intensive care after contracting monkeypox in Europe. So far, health authorities have not recorded any deaths from the disease.
