The Echternach Hopping Procession was recognized as UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010. This tradition dates back to the early 12th century and is deeply rooted in the veneration of Saint Willibrord, a monk and the founder of Echternach Abbey. Saint Willibrord was renowned for his missionary work and his ability to heal certain ailments.

The procession commences early in the morning within the abbey courtyard, graced by the presence of the highest ecclesiastical authorities of the country. As the singers recite litanies, approximately 8,000 dancers, divided into 45 groups following a ritual passed down through generations, join the solemn march.

The culmination of the procession takes place with a service held in the basilica of the town of Echternach. This grand event attracts an average of 13,000 pilgrims annually, signifying the significant influx of visitors to the eastern town of the country.
