The Echternach lake is poised to become Luxembourg’s fourth bathing area.
A separated swimming area the size of two football fields will be set up, explained local alderman Ben Scheuer: “We hope to open the swimming area by August. We will install a new bridge and still have to think about a plan to manage waste disposal. I am optimistic and looking forward to the opening.”
It is already permitted to cross the lake by boat. Although there were recent incidents of dead fish floating on the water surface, alderman Scheuer said that this had nothing to do with the quality of the water: “The Water Management Authority takes samples on a regular basis. The water quality is good and respects the norms of swimming waters.”
It will be free to swim in the Echternach lake, but people will be responsible for themselves. There will not be any supervision. Visitors can bring their own food and drinks. However, smoking is not permitted on any of the beaches.
