On the night of 5 November, a young woman from Luxembourg lost her life in a road accident in Thailand. The trial for the accident took place on Tuesday morning in Thailand.
The driver responsible for the accident was handed a two-year suspended prison sentence. The family of the victim intends to appeal the verdict, as confirmed by the victim’s aunt to our colleagues from RTL.lu on Tuesday morning.
Initially, the defendant’s lawyer suggested offering financial compensation to avoid a trial, an offer which was rejected by the family of the victim, Cey-làn.
The Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been providing support to the victim’s family, maintaining constant communication with the victim’s mother. Representatives from the Luxembourg embassy and consulate in Bangkok and Phuket were present at the trial.
The family of the young Luxembourg national had hired a local lawyer, while the family of the other accident victim, a young US citizen, had enlisted the services of a US-based attorney who travelled to Thailand specifically for the trial.
Expressing their dissatisfaction with the two-year suspended sentence, the aunt told RTL, “We can’t take this anymore; we believe that a two-year suspended sentence is simply unfair and unjust.” Consequently, the victim’s family has decided to appeal the verdict.
