Technical troublesDoor malfunction and rail problems behind Friday train chaos in Luxembourg

RTL Today
A series of technical issues and urgent maintenance work disrupted rail services on Friday, affecting multiple lines in Luxembourg.

Rail services on the Luxembourg City - Esch/Alzette - Rodange and Luxembourg City - Thionville - Metz lines experienced significant disruptions on Friday evening due to urgent maintenance work between Bettembourg and Luxembourg. Further details have now emerged about the causes of the delays.

The issues began on Friday morning near Hollerich station, when the driver of a train on the Käerjeng-Sanem-Rodange-Athus line reported a problem with the doors. To ensure passenger safety and prevent anyone from disembarking into a potentially dangerous situation, a general alarm was triggered, halting traffic for 20 minutes. Marc Schlammes, head of communications at the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL), emphasised that safety protocols are a top priority for the CFL and are strictly enforced in such scenarios.

Later in the afternoon, rail traffic between Luxembourg City and Thionville was interrupted due to “emergency maintenance work” between Bettembourg and the capital. This led to adjustments in the frequency of trains on the Luxembourg City - Esch/Alzette - Rodange line, while services on the Luxembourg City - Thionville - Metz line were temporarily suspended. Partial service on the latter route resumed at 5.39pm.

According to Schlammes, the disruptions were caused by an issue with a rail, which was addressed as a priority due to the potential risks associated with such problems. The CFL worked to resolve the situation throughout the evening.

Normal service was eventually restored shortly before 2am on Saturday. In a statement, the CFL expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and thanked them for their understanding.
