Mars Di BartolomeoDifferences within the coalition do not prevent 'decent compromises'

The LSAP MP and head of the Parliamentary Health Commission noted that "if there were no differences between the ruling parties and the other parties, we could just form a single party."

In an interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio on Tuesday morning, MP Mars di Bartolomeo from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) reacted to remarks made by Gilles Baum, the parliamentary group chair of the Democratic Party (DP).

Di Bartolomeo said that despite these differences, the governing coalition of the DP, the LSAP, and the Green Party (déi Gréng) still manages to find “decent compromises,” for example during the last tripartite meeting. The MP did stress that the tripartite tax cuts were initiated by the LSAP. On the other hand, di Bartolomeo regretted between the lines that those who profited from the crisis, especially energy supply groups and other sectors, have still not been made to contribute. “It’s always the same people who are lucky,” he said.

An independent Covid-19 inquiry?

For the 30th time, Mars di Bartolomeo will be the rapporteur of the new Covid-19 law, which the Chamber of Deputies will vote on Thursday. The law will repeal the isolation requirement and the mask mandate in hospitals and the care sector. Referring to three years of pandemic management, the former Minister of Health stated that it is vital to “critically examine the management of the crisis,” which is why he supports an independent assessment of the government’s Covid-19 management. A commission of inquiry, on the other hand, “would go too far.” Di Bartolomeo stressed that if mistakes were made, they were not made consciously. “In any case, we have learned a lot from the health crisis,” the MP added.

According to di Bartolomeo, these experiences and the previous Covid-19 laws should now “serve as a basis, a sort of ‘toolbox’, that could be described as a pandemic law.”

Finally, di Bartolomeo confirmed that he will run in the legislative elections on 11 October.
