The average age of the approved candidates running for a seat on behalf of Luxembourg’s Left party lies at around 30.5 years old with the party purposefully skipping the nomination of a lead candidate.
For their European election programme, ‘Déi Lénk’ (the Left) focused on a green-red vision, where people and nature are placed back at the core of political action. The party believes that programme-wise, there is generally a lack of good left-wing alternatives, leading to disappointment, frustration and the growing popularity of right and sometimes far-right extremist parties.
“Left parties have a historic duty to take the lead in shaping the foundations of a Europe that is based on equality, social justice, environmental protection, and solidarity. Labour rights, healthcare, education, housing, healthy and sustainable nutrition and environmental protection are among our party’s most fundamental principles and they are non-negotiable,” according to Ana Correia Da Veiga.
She continues to say that the so-called “social Europe” that is often spoken about does not exist in the present day.
Therefore, the Left advocates for an EU that works for the best interests of the working population, not just corporations. Climate protection should not be a luxury. The Left calls for an end to European free trade policies and a return to small-scale farming operations that work with respect for nature and animals.
In regards to European foreign affairs, one of the candidates, Tania Mousel, explains that the party believes in diplomacy over weapons and violence. She continues: “We stand behind the right to asylum, refugee status, and family reunification. We are against the Dublin Regulation and for a more socially equitable distribution of refugees in Europe. Furthermore, we are in favour of regulating and making immigration legal and more accessible for people, as well as legalising undocumented people who have been residing in Europe for six months.”
Regarding domestic politics. the party also discussed the controversial begging ban. The party believes the ban to be ineffective at tackling the root causes of homelessness and poverty. With the current CSV-DP government, the Left consider their work cut out for them.
Here’s the complete list of candidates: Ana Correia da Veiga (41 Joer), André Marques (28), Anastasia Iampolskaia (25), Ben Muller (26); Tania Mousel (34) and Alija Suljic (28).
