Specifically, the Greens suggest that the general development and building regulation plans be changed so that more green spaces become available, said Greens municipal councillor and MP François Benoy. Green roofs should be created, fitted with solar panels. Currently, only 2% of the capital’s public buildings are fitted to generate solar energy.

They also argue for shared spaces in the inner city, more cycling and pedestrian paths, as well as expanding the tram line and prioritising public transport over private motorised vehicles. Residents should be involved in the planning phases and decision making process, the Greens say.

There is also a disproportionate amount of waste being generated, says councillor Linda Gaasch - 523kg of waste per inhabitant. Waste taxes should be reformed to reward those who produce less of it, Gaasch believes. Furthermore, parking cards should only be allowed for the quarter in which the vehicle owner resides.

“If we want to stop the global climate crisis, we need to act local. Right now”, the council members conclude.
