ESCH FIRE - A fire broke out in Esch sur Alzette on Monday evening. The fire departments of Esch and Mondercange were alerted but according to the latest information, nobody was injured.

BONNEVOIE MURDER - The body found by police in Bonnevoie on Thursday has been identified. The victim was a 32-year-old Portuguese woman who had lived in Luxembourg for several years. The alleged suspect, who has been arrested since Thursday, is the owner of the home where she and her boyfriend lived, and is also Portuguese. The investigation is still ongoing.

ZURICH BALL - After a 2-year break caused by the pandemic, the 60th Zurich Ball took place on Sunday evening. Over 4,500 young people attended making it the largest ball to take place in Luxembourg. Our colleagues at RTL said the ball belongs to Christmas as baubles on a Christmas tree. Having been cancelled last year, 2 days before it was due to take place because of the Covid19 pandemic, the state assisted this years ball, that cost upwards of 130,000 euro to organise.

‘BLIZZARD OF THE CENTURY’ - A severe winter storm that has swept across North America has left the city of Buffalo, New York, looking like a war zone, the state governor has said. On Monday the city recorded 25 weather-related deaths, up from 13 on Sunday. Blizzard conditions are stretching from Canada as far south as the Rio Grande, killing at least 50 people nationwide. Thousands remain without power in the Buffalo region, where there is as much as 124 cm of snow on the ground. That’s 1 meter and 24 cm of snow.

RUSSIA’S WAR - Ukraine is hoping for a peace summit with Russia, to take place in February 2023. UN Secretary-General António Guterres would be acting as a mediator and Russia’s invitation to the summit would be conditional: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has told the Associated Press that Russia would have to face a war crimes tribunal before attending the summit. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg is less hopeful about it, recently saying: “Putin is ready to be in this war for a long time”.

COVID SURGE - Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged officials to take steps to protect lives in his first public remarks on Covid-19 since Beijing dramatically loosened hardline containment measures this month. China is experiencing the planet’s biggest surge in infections after abruptly lifting restrictions that torpedoed the economy last month. Studies estimate that around one million people could die over the next few months.

KOSOVO TENSIONS - Serbia’s troops have been placed on the ‘highest level’ of alert over the latest tensions with Kosovo. On December 10, Serbs in northern Kosovo set up barricades to protest against the arrest of an ex-policeman, and a rise in reported shootings, the latest on Sunday, have been observed, according to the NATO-led peacekeeping force. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Belgrade has refused to recognise it, along with Slovakia, Spain, Romania, Cyprus and Greece, within the EU.

Arsenal opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the UK’s Premier League after coming from behind to beat West Ham 3-1 last night.

Liverpool made a winning return to Premier League action as they restarted their bid to force their way into the top four with an entertaining victory over Aston Villa which reduces their gap to the Champions League places to five points.
