Over the past nine months, there have been dozens of pro-Palestine demonstrations organised by the CPJPO in Luxembourg. However, their work is far from over as the CPJPO wants to remind everyone that, while many are enjoying their summer break, the civilian population in Gaza continues to endure extreme hardships and atrocities.
Around 150 people gathered in Cessange to participate in a demonstration. They discussed the catastrophic situation in Gaza and together planned further demonstrations for the upcoming weeks and months. They are demanding, among other things, that Western governments take responsibility and exert more pressure on the Israeli government to end the war in Gaza. To increase pressure on politicians, there will be more demonstrations throughout the summer, which will likely intensify after the summer break. The group in Cessange shared that it was absolutely necessary for them to protest here to do whatever was in their power to help the situation in Gaza.
According to official figures from the United Nations (UN), 40 million tonnes of rubble have resulted from Israel’s military offensive. According to calculations, it would take 100 trucks a day for 15 years to clear this chaos. The bombings have destroyed a total of 137.000 buildings, including schools, hospitals, roads, sewage systems, and homes. Even if the material damage can be quantified in monetary terms, Gaza is currently undergoing a level of human suffering that is beyond measure.
In a historic ruling, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concluded that Israel is illegally occupying Palestinian territories, amounting “Israel’s policies and practices, including the maintenance and expansion of settlements, the construction of associated infrastructure, and the wall, the exploitation of natural resources, the proclamation of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the comprehensive application of Israeli domestic law in East Jerusalem and its extensive application in the West Bank” to annexation.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a political solution to the conflict, once again backing a two-state solution. In a previous report, the ICJ stated that Israel must end its occupation as soon as possible.
