EnvironmentCouncil for Sustainability calls for end of fuel tourism, more education on climate

On Wednesday morning, the Council for Sustainability presented a set of proposed measures designed to reduce the Grand Duchy's environmental impact.

The Council for Sustainability, which is made up of 15 experts that were selected by the government, worked on a set of proposals over the course of last year. On Wednesday morning, the Council presented a selection from a total of 150 measures.

The Council highlighted the need to reduce the use of resources. President Romain Poulles noted: “This is a matter of planetary limitations.” Contrary to social crises, there is no room for negotiations on this front, he explained.

Council members argued that improvements can be made in several sectors. For instance, children in Luxembourg’s schools should be made aware of sustainability at a young age. Another suggestion is to abolish fuel tourism by adjusting prices to those of Luxembourg’s neighbouring countries.

Officials believe that it is important to involve the general population in these changes. They also acknowledged that real improvements can only be made if there is international cooperation and consensus on how to jointly tackle these universal problems.
