A victim's storyCoping with the emotional toll of a home invasion

RTL Today
As autumn and winter settle in, it's no secret that burglaries tend to rise. The victims often deal with more than just material damage.

Reports of break-ins in homes, flats, and cellars are disturbingly frequent occurrences. In 2022, the police recorded approximately 3,000 cases of such incidents. Of these, 1,600 constituted successful burglaries, while 1,400 were attempts. Nearly half of these occurred in cellars or garages. However, homes also remain attractive targets.

Many people still believe that burglars mostly strike under the cover of darkness. In reality, the majority of these crimes transpire between 10am and 8pm, i.e., a time when many people are either at work or away from home.

Recently, Jessica* became a victim of burglary, an ordeal that took an emotional toll on her.

“It was a moment of shock”

Jessica had been visiting her father in the evening. Upon returning home and opening her front door, an immediate sense of foreboding washed over her. “I already saw in the hallway that drawers were open, and things were lying on the floor,” Jessica recalled. Initially, she suspected her dog might have been up to no good, but her concerns deepened when she spotted a watch box in the hallway, unfamiliar and out of place. In response, Jessica sprang into action, swiftly leaving her house to seek assistance from neighbours and contact the police. “It was a moment of shock. I started to cry. I didn’t want to believe that it could happen to me as well,” Jessica admitted.

It was later revealed that the intruders gained access through the rear kitchen door, which they had forcefully breached with specialised tools. While the material losses were certainly distressing, the emotional scars left by the burglars ran deeper. “A lot of jewellery with sentimental value was stolen,” Jessica lamented. Nonetheless, she expressed relief that she was not home when the break-in occurred. “Perhaps they would have attacked me… You never know,” Jessica reflected.

To regain a sense of security, Jessica has since invested in an alarm system and security cameras, steps recommended by the police to fortify one’s home against potential intrusions.

Home security: Precautions to keep in mind

Always remember to secure all windows and doors when leaving your home, including those on higher floors. This principle applies to windows on tilt as well. Ensure that both the cellar and garage are locked at all times. If you have an alarm system, activate it, even if you are away briefly. In addition, make sure that there are no ladders, tools, or garden furniture around your premises that could be exploited by potential intruders to facilitate unlawful entry. When planning to be away for an extended period, inform your neighbours of your absence. You can also sign up for the #SecherVakanz service offered by the police.
