Underage migrantsComposition of commission for underage refugees jeopardises neutrality: Consultative Human Rights Commission

Luxembourg's Consultative Human Rights Commission (CCDH) has criticised the composition of the new commission in charge of underage refugees.

CCDH president Gilbert Pregno took issue with the composition of the new commission at a press conference this Wednesday.

The new commission will comprise four members: a representative of the National Office for Children, one person from the National Reception Office (ONA), a representative of the public prosecutor's office and a representative of the Ministry of Immigration. The common denominator of these entities is that they are part of the state. According to Pregno, this jeopardises neutrality and independence.

The Human Rights Commission welcomed Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn's dedication to the protection of unaccompanied underage migrants on the international level. At the same time, the commission lamented that Luxembourg's legislative framework was cobbled together unprofessionally. The CCDH stressed that the government should rely on the counsel of international experts when it comes to issues that affect human lives.

The commission urged the government to publicise future projects and draft bills in advance so that CCDH or other third parties are able to offer their thoughts on them.
