Littering remains a significant problem in the public space. 40 years ago, Schifflange thus introduced its own version of a spring-cleaning, during which locals help pick up unwanted trash. Despite grey skies and rainfall, a large crowd of people gathered this weekend for the annual event.
The start of the cleaning was scheduled for 10 am on Saturday. It was the first time the event took place in times of the pandemic. Last year, the spring-cleaning had to be cancelled. This year, participants were split into teams to better separate individuals from each other.
A significant amount of cigarette butts were collected on Saturday, mostly around those spaces where people tend to stay together for longer periods of time. Authorities now recommend that when people go for extended walks through nature, they carry a bag to collect at least five pieces of trash.
Locals were busy for over two hours picking up trash around the municipality. The spring-cleaning was thus considered to be a success, although the traditional lunch afterwards could not be organised this year.
