Bargain hunt'Coat Sunday' draws crowds to the capital despite gloomy weather

RTL Today
Braving the gloomy weather, shoppers flocked to Luxembourg City stores on Coat Sunday to snag special offers on autumn and winter attire, showing the resilience of this long-standing retail tradition despite the allure of covered and heated shopping centres.

Coat Sunday, known in Luxembourg as ‘Mantelsondeg’, is a long-standing tradition for retailers, giving them the opportunity to attract customers with special offers, particularly on autumn and winter essentials.

Shopkeepers had feared the bad weather might drive customers to indoor, heated shopping centers. Nevertheless, potential buyers braved the gloomy Sunday weather, donning coats they likely intended to replace.

Unsurprisingly, people seemed particularly interested in warm clothing, including jumpers and down jackets, according to one shop assistant.

For Mireille Rahmé-Bley, president of the Luxembourg City Commercial Union, the ‘Mantelsonndeg’ is “the weekend when we advise our members to open their doors. I think that Saturday went very well, but it’s still a little early to make an assessment of the two days.”

In case you missed the chance to grab some bargains, the next Sunday opening in Luxembourg City is already scheduled for 26 November.
