Claude Wiseler has confirmed his resignation as CSV co-president following his appointment as President of the Chamber of Deputies last week, citing the inherent incompatibility between the roles of party president and Chamber president as the reason behind his exit.

Justice minister Margue will now continue as sole president until the CSV party congress in March, the second woman to do so since Erna Hennicot-Schoepges, who led the party from 1995 until 2004. Designated EU commissioners Christophe Hansen and Stéphanie Weydert will stay on as general secretaries.

Wiseler assumed the role of party president in 2021, succeeding Frank Engel as a result of the “Frëndeskreess” case, which saw the latter prosecuted for fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and forgery. Engel was later acquitted of all charges and went on to launch the Fokus political party. Margue was appointed co-president a year later, following the amendment of the party statutes.

In the recent parliamentary elections, Margue emerged as the second-choice candidate on the CSV list for the central constituency, with Luc Frieden taking the lead. Wiseler secured fifth position.
