Members of the two leading political parties in Wormeldange gathered on Wednesday evening to appoint a new council leader following the death of Mayor Max Hengel in August. Claude Pundel, who previously served as an alderman, has been named the new mayor, while Pierre Adam will take over Pundel’s former role.

Mathis Ast will remain the second alderman of the town.

The decision follows the 2023 local elections, where the group ‘Är Equipe fir d’Wormer Gemeng’ (‘Your team for the Wormeldange municipality’), closely linked to the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), secured six seats on the local council. Their main rival, ‘Zesummen, fir eis Gemeng’ (‘Together, for our town’), associated with the Democratic Party (DP), won five seats.

At the time of the election, a power-sharing agreement saw Hengel appointed mayor, with Pundel and Ast filling the two alderman positions. Following Hengel’s passing after a prolonged battle with cancer, the council agreed to reorganise leadership.

On 16 September, Félix Schaeler joined the council for ‘Är Equipe’ after Victor Cordeiro Marques declined the position. The council is set to validate these decisions in Monday’s session and will officially announce the new roles.

Hengel, who also served as an MP, passed away in August following a prolonged battle with cancer.
