Energy sobrietyCity of Esch unveils plans to lower energy consumption
Dark Christmas decorations and delayed street lighting: The City of Esch has unveiled its energy sobriety plan for this winter.
With a sharp increase in electricity prices, “the City of Esch takes a series of measures to limit its energy consumption and carbon footprint”, the municipality communicated on Wednesday morning. The following steps have been taken:
- Lighting of public buildings: Buidlings such as the library, conservatory or Bridderhaus will only be lit up between 4-9pm.
- Public lighting: Street lights will be switched on one hour later in the evening and switched off one hour earlier in the morning. The measure comes into effect this week.
- Christmas lights: Decorations will only be lit for 6 hours per day between 4-9pm. That saves 50% energy. On Fridays and Saturdays only, lighting is extended until 10pm.
- Office heating: Since 1 October, radiators in schools and offices operated by the City have been set to 20°C.
- No car park heating: The temperature of sports halls, storage rooms and technical workshops has been set to 15°C and the heating systems of the municipal car parks have been completely shut down.
Considering that a 1°C reduction saves 6% electricity, “these measures allow for enormous energy cost saving for the City of Esch”, the statement read.
