Conservation charity natur&ëmwelt launched the public vote for Luxembourg's 2027 bird of the year on its official platform on 21 September.
For the first time in half a century, the organisation is asking the general public to vote for the species which will succeed the sand martin. Citizens have until 23 October 2026 to choose from three candidates to promote local biodiversity.
"It is not a question of whether these species are well-known, rare or threatened, but above all of highlighting the diversity of our birdlife", the non-profit wrote in its press release.
"Each bird lives in a different habitat and has specific needs. It therefore represents not only its species, but its entire environment and, with it, many other species."
The Great Crested Grebe: this elegant waterbird is known for its superb courtship displays and floating nest. It represents the protection of wetlands, including lakes, ponds, and streams.
Its bright white neck, colourful feathers, and black crest give it a regal appearance.
The Eurasian Tree Sparrow: a small, agile passerine bird that lives on the edges of woods and orchards.

With its chestnut-brown head, white collar and cheeks marked with a characteristic dark spot, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow is easily distinguished from the House Sparrow.
The Goldcrest: the smallest bird in Europe, it measures only about 9 cm and weighs barely 6 grams.

Recognisable by the bright gold streak that lends it its name, the Goldcrest lives mainly in coniferous forests.
Beyond simply being a popularity contest, this election aims to raise public awareness about the protection of natural habitats. Voters can learn about the specific characteristics of each species and vote online on the natur&ëmwelt Bird of the Year website.
The winner will be officially announced at the end of the voting period.
