Traffic disruptions are expected to continue for at least two days on the A1, with significant congestion in both directions around Gasperich and Kirchberg. As of 8:30am, the CITA reported traffic jams stretching 10km. The delays follow an announcement from the roadworks department on Sunday, confirming that damage had been caused to safety equipment in the Howald Tunnel.
While the tunnel remains open, traffic is limited: the left lane is closed in the Germany-Luxembourg direction. The second lane is expected to reopen by Tuesday morning at 5am. Traffic in the Luxembourg-Trier direction remains unaffected.
In addition to the unforeseen repair work, a planned construction project had been underway since Friday in the Howald Tunnel. A roadblock was set up on the lanes heading towards Gasperich, with traffic redirected through the opposite tunnel towards Trier.
Speed limits were reduced to 50 km/h within the tunnel and 70 km/h on the stretch between Kirchberg and Gasperich. The work was completed by 5am on Monday.
