CGFP underline that it cannot be the responsibility of the people to carry the costs of both a pandemic and a war, as they did not cause either of them. Since the government’s tax revenue has increased along with the rise of energy costs, it should dispose of the necessary financial means to find a solution.

The union further draws attention to the fact that even though the EU Commission has granted its members permission to limit energy costs, the Luxembourg government has “inexplicably refused to make use of this avenue.” Similarly, decreasing the value added tax on electricity and gas has not been considered.

The CGFP statement also concludes that the proposals made during the energy roundtable are too insignificant to make a difference. Furthermore, the union warns that if the government questions the indexation procedure, it will infringe the salary agreement. They also lament that employers’ representatives “never miss out on a chance to lobby for an abolishing of the indexation.”

The statement concludes by saying that the pending tripartite cannot produce such insignificant measures as the energy roundtable. Should the meeting turn out to be only an information session where the government tells unions about their plans, then CGFP will do everything in its power to stand in for social values.
