In an interview with RTL, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich stated that the Catholic Church would welcome a TV broadcast of its services over the upcoming Christmas festivities.

Hollerich recently attended a meeting of the religious communities with Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who also acts as the Minister for Religious Affairs, to discuss the new Covid-19 regulations. The cardinal stressed that especially for the elderly and the residents of nursery homes, a digital distribution was not an ideal solution.

Hollerich explained that there is a strong wish among the elderly population to participate in Christmas services. According to the head of the Luxembourg Catholic Church, Bettel acknowledged the Church’s suggestions and promised to see what could be done.

The goal is to reduce the number of people physically present in churches in order to allow services to take place under optimal circumstances.

In regard to the traditional Midnight Mass, Hollerich stressed that it would take place in Luxembourg City’s Notre-Dame Cathedral at 8 pm in order to allow people to return to their homes before the start of the curfew at 11 pm.

However, only 100 people will be able to attend the service on site. The rest will be able to follow the service via a livestream on the internet and potentially – should the Church’s request be granted – via TV broadcast.
