A Cargolux Boeing 747 dumped 49 tons of kerosene over parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland on Sunday evening after reporting technical problems shortly after takeoff from Luxembourg.
The aircraft, bound for Dubai, released the fuel between 5.50 and 6.30pm while flying at an altitude of 13,000 feet – about 4 kilometres – over the area between Eppelborn and Enkenbach-Alsenborn, according to German media.
After completing the fuel dump, the plane landed safely back in Luxembourg.
German environmental authorities stated that most of the kerosene evaporated during the fuel dump and does not pose a significant environmental risk.
