Climate planCarbon tax and increased excise duties in autumn: the Greens

RTL Today
Fraction president of the Greens, Josée Lorsché, took stock of the parliamentary year earlier this Friday.

Lorsché said that increased excise duties and the planned carbon tax lie at the heart of "serious climate politics" both in Luxembourg and abroad.

She stressed that these taxes should not further disadvantage certain population groups. For this reason, the Greens are in favour of reinvesting a part of the collected taxes into financially weaker households.

She explained that the ongoing pandemic has shifted the general focus towards other issues. The future, she stressed, nevertheless also remains crucially important. Efficient green politics are a long process with ups and downs, she said, underlining the importance of explaining this process to the public in order to coordinate collective efforts in the fight against climate change.

The Greens showed themselves satisfied with this parliamentary year. Lorsché argued that Luxembourg has become a pioneer in several fields, citing the banning of glyphosate, the introduction of free public transport, and investments in mobility as well as green renovation. Regarding Luxembourg's housing market, Lorsché placed her hopes in the new housing fund, the reformed rental law, and the "Pacte Logement." All these measures, she said, no longer exclusively revolve around growth but also focus on sustainability and affordable prices.
