The road has caused a considerable amount of controversy, as it does not have any priority for gritting in icy conditions. A motorist was driving towards Itzig from Contern on the CR226 at around 9am and lost control going around a bend. The car ended up crashing into several trees.
This is not the first accident that has occurred lately. The colder temperatures have brought icy conditions with them and many roads have become icier, especially as some are not gritted. The CR226 in particular has been the topic of many discussions, as a sign states that motorists are not permitted to use the road in snowy and icy weather.
A parliamentary question submitted by Hesperange mayor Marc Lies also failed to resolve the issue.
