In a recent interview on RTL Radio Wednesday morning, patient care took centre stage as Shirley Feider, President of the Federation of Patient Associations (CAPAT), discussed the evolving role of patients in healthcare.

Feider introduced the concept of the “partner patient,” emphasising the need for patients to play a more active role in managing their health. She underscored the idea that patients possess valuable expertise in their daily lives, lifestyles, and health histories. When combined with the expertise of healthcare professionals, this collaboration could lead to improved healthcare outcomes and, especially in the case of chronic illnesses, a higher quality of life.

The President of CAPAT highlighted that increased patient involvement not only enhances healthcare but also fosters a sense of value and motivation among patients. While acknowledging existing initiatives for greater patient participation, Feider advocated for the institutionalisation of such practices, making them more commonplace.

Feider suggested that Luxembourg could draw inspiration from successful models abroad, adapting and simplifying them for local implementation.

Professionalisation required

CAPAT, operational for a year with 13 member associations, supports patient groups by addressing challenges, providing information, and raising awareness. Recently, CAPAT initiated a comprehensive survey to establish a national register of patient associations, shedding light on their day-to-day challenges, including access, logistics, and care quality.

While operating on a voluntary basis, Feider stressed the need for professionalisation to enhance efficiency.

Hope for improved healthcare provisions

Looking ahead, she expressed hopes for improved healthcare provision for patients, citing the example of being able to give feedback after undergoing treatment.

Feider is pleased about CAPAT’s involvement in the National Health Observatory and expressed a desire for the “partner patient” concept not to remain a mere trend but to be actively implemented, ensuring a place for patients in every aspect of healthcare.

Thursday marks National Partner Patient Day, organised by the Federation of Luxembourg Hospitals (FHL).
