The Cancer Foundation’s new national strategy is centred on the concept of a “tobacco-free generation.” In this endeavour, the Foundation will work with 36 partner organisations.

The Cancer Foundation also hopes to persuade politicians and the general public of the importance of the plan.

The goal is to reduce the number of smokers to fewer than 5% by 2040. In a survey, 60% of respondents said that anti-tobacco measures are “urgently needed” in Luxembourg. Eight in ten people would be willing to support the “tobacco-free generation” project.

The strategy is based on six measures:

  • Substantial annual increases in the price of tobacco and related products
  • Regular prevention campaigns to prevent young people from taking up smoking
  • Prohibition of advertising and surreptitious advertising
  • Restricting the availability of tobacco products
  • Effective protection of the population against passive tobacco use
  • Promote tobacco cessation policies and provide effective cessation programmes

Smoking is on the rise again, particularly among young people. 37% of 18- to 34-year-olds smoke “more or less regularly.” This figure includes hookah use but not electric cigarettes. Newer products, such as nicotine pouches, are also becoming increasingly popular.
