The bus situation in Kirchberg is increasingly frustrating residents, following changes to the bus network introduced in mid-December. Since then, many routes have been stopping at platform 4 Simon de Beauvoir of the bus station near Luxexpo, where congestion regularly builds up, while other platforms remain largely unused.

In addition, several of these lines now begin and end in the Kiem district, prompting complaints from locals about the growing number of buses in their streets.

For residents, Boulevard Pierre Frieden has effectively turned into a bus terminal. Daniel Mantrisi, who lives nearby, said buses now travel up and down the street every few minutes, often without passengers. Combined with ongoing roadworks linked to the redevelopment of the boulevard, he described the situation as overwhelming. According to Mantrisi, living there no longer feels like being in a residential neighbourhood, but rather next to a bus depot.

Since the mid-December changes, nine bus lines have been terminating at the Simon de Beauvoir stop and five at the Avalon stop. The Public Transport Administration has explained that these adjustments were made to improve quality of life around the Luxexpo area.

Previously, buses without passengers would often take breaks at various informal locations across the neighbourhood; they have now been assigned fixed stopping points.

Residents, however, are questioning whether these designated parking spots should be located directly next to housing. Mantrisi said buses are frequently left standing with their engines running, sometimes for up to an hour, raising concerns about noise, air pollution, and whether the area can still be considered suitable for living.

Concerns extend beyond comfort to safety. Marceline Goergen, who also lives in Kirchberg, says the situation has become particularly dangerous for pedestrians. She explained that when she walks her dogs, crossing the road can be difficult because buses are parked so close to pedestrian crossings that drivers approaching downhill cannot see people attempting to cross. In her view, the risk of accidents is high, adding that the street has lost any real sense of liveability.

While residents recognise that bus drivers are entitled to take breaks, many question whether this needs to happen in the middle of a residential area. Marc Seywert, another local resident, pointed to the Héienhaff car park as a possible alternative, saying he has never seen buses parked or stopping there, despite the available space.

Asked to comment, the City of Luxembourg told RTL that, according to the information available to it, a solution is currently being sought at national level. They added that they cannot provide further details and refer enquiries to the Public Transport Administration.
