Since the start of the works a year ago, motorists who use the A3 between the French border and Croix de Gasperich on a daily basis have had their nerves tested.
In addition to the narrowing of the carriageway to two lanes between Croix de Gasperich and Berchem – the first 2x3 lane section to be completed this autumn – cars entering from France are now restricted to two narrow lanes at the Livange interchange, which is located before Berchem. Traffic is now limited to 70 km/h in this area as well.
After several weeks of preparation, including the demolition of the protective wall, the Bridges and Roads Authority has been diverting all motorway traffic since the beginning of this week.
This reduction of traffic in both directions at the Livange interchange coincides with the beginning of the second phase of major works to widen the A3.
The Livange viaduct will be expanded by one additional lane on each side and an emergency lane as part of the upgrade of the motorway to 2x3 lanes between the French border and the Croix de Gasperich.
The large-scale redesign of the Livange interchange, as well as the installation of traffic-light junctions on the N13, will take place within the same phase.
The existing 3-metre-high noise barrier on the A3 will eventually be extended by 351 metres to protect the Peppange site.
